Avalanche Studios is the original creator of the award-winning Just Cause franchise (published by Square Enix), the developer of Mad Max (published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment) and is currently working on Rage 2 (published by Bethesda Softworks), scheduled for release in 2019. As a publisher, Avalanche Studios has brought free-to-play service theHunter Classic to market and reached more than 7 million registered players across 190 countries. The theHunter franchise was expanded in 2017 to also include premium title theHunter: Call of the Wild, which was released for PC and subsequently console platforms. Avalanche Studios, which is based in Stockholm, New York City and Malmö, was founded in 2003 by Christofer Sundberg and Linus Blomberg. The studio develops games using its proprietary Apex technology, enabling huge open worlds filled with emergent gameplay.

The Position

Avalanche Studios is looking to hire a world-class Character Programmer to join a newly formed team based in Malmö, Sweden. As a senior / principal character programmer we think you bring long experience from previous productions developing animation systems and character mechanics for AAA console games. Our ambition has always been to create believable characters in immersive open worlds and the sandbox components typically found in Avalanche games makes it especially challenging and interesting when developing systemic animation, AI and character solutions. 

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in sophisticated traversal and combat actions, animation blending, character scripting, animation state machines and similar techniques.  First person action character work, AI locomotion system work and multipede character development is of particular interest.

For the right candidate (principal level) there is also a component of studio level technical direction in the form of planning and execution of the long-term technical roadmap in the areas of Characters, Animation and AI.

Required Qualifications

  • C/C++ fluency
  • Completed and shipped several full-cycle console game projects
  • Strong interest and experience with modern character animation techniques
  • Familiarity with modern AI and physics game systems
  • Solid understanding of 3D math and its application to game development
  • Experience with performance and resource optimization for consoles
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with other game-dev disciplines (animation, design, production, effects, etc)
  • Passion for playing, making and thinking about games

Desired Qualifications

  • Direct experience with PS4 or XBox One development for a shipped title
  • Familiarity with Python scripting
  • Familiarity with modern real-time animation processes and pipelines
